Learn everything you'll ever need to get the most out of Kanodo

Basic vs Pro

Kanodo is available in a basic version and a Pro version. The basic version provides full access to all features but with limits on how many items you can create. The Pro version removes these limits, allowing unlimited use.

Understanding the versions

Both versions include the same features. You can use workspaces, boards, columns, cards, mini-boards, labels, attachments, search, dashboards, filtering, calendar export, and all settings. The difference is purely in capacity.

This model allows you to fully evaluate Kanodo before deciding to upgrade. You can test every feature and understand how the app works without payment. If you find value in Kanodo and need more capacity, upgrading to Pro unlocks unlimited use.

Basic version limits

The basic version includes the following limits:

Feature Limit
Workspaces 1
Boards 2 total
Columns per board 3
Cards 100 total
Labels per board 5
Attachments per card 5
Mini-columns per card 2
Mini-cards 10 total
Checklist items per mini-card 5

How limits work

Limits are checked when you try to create new items. If you are at the limit, a message appears explaining the limit and offering the option to upgrade.

Existing items are not affected if limits change. For example, if you created items during a trial and later hit a limit, your existing content remains accessible.

Limits across the app

Some limits are per-item (like columns per board), while others are totals across the app (like total cards). The limits table above specifies which is which.

What Pro unlocks

The Pro version removes all quantity limits. You can create:

  • Unlimited workspaces
  • Unlimited boards
  • Unlimited columns per board
  • Unlimited cards
  • Unlimited labels per board
  • Unlimited attachments per card
  • Unlimited mini-columns per card
  • Unlimited mini-cards
  • Unlimited checklist items per mini-card

There are no feature differences. Pro does not add new features; it removes the quantity restrictions.

When you hit a limit

When you try to create an item that would exceed a limit, Kanodo shows a message.

The message explains:

  • Which limit you have reached
  • What the current limit is
  • That upgrading to Pro removes the limit

From this message, you can:

  • Choose to upgrade, which takes you to the upgrade screen
  • Continue with the basic version, accepting the limit

How to upgrade

You can upgrade to Pro at any time, not just when hitting a limit.

From the menu

Open the Kanodo menu and select "Upgrade to Pro". You can also find this option in the Help menu.

The upgrade screen

The upgrade screen shows:

  • Information about what Pro includes
  • The price (a one-time purchase)
  • Purchase and restore options

Completing the purchase

Click the upgrade button to initiate purchase through the App Store. You need to be signed into your Apple ID. The standard App Store purchase flow completes the transaction.

One-time purchase

Pro is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. You pay once and have Pro permanently. There are no recurring fees.

After upgrading

Once the purchase completes, limits are removed immediately. The upgrade menu options disappear since you are already Pro.

Restoring a purchase

If you have previously purchased Pro and need to restore it, perhaps after reinstalling Kanodo or setting up a new Mac, you can restore your purchase.

How to restore

  1. Open the upgrade screen (from the menu)
  2. Click the "Restore Purchase" option
  3. The App Store verifies your purchase history
  4. If a previous purchase is found, Pro is unlocked

When restoration fails

If no previous purchase is found, you see a message indicating there is nothing to restore. This could mean:

  • You have not previously purchased Pro
  • You are signed into a different Apple ID than the one used for purchase
  • There is a connectivity issue with the App Store

Ensure you are signed into the correct Apple ID and have an internet connection.

Checking your status

Menu visibility
When you have Pro, the upgrade menu options are hidden since there is nothing to upgrade.

Limit behaviour
When you have Pro, you never see limit messages. Creating items always succeeds (within normal app constraints).

Deciding whether to upgrade

When basic is enough

The basic version may be sufficient if:

  • You have a single main area of focus (one workspace is enough)
  • You manage one or two small projects (two boards is enough)
  • You have simple workflows (three columns per board is enough)
  • You do not have many tasks at once (100 cards is enough)

When to consider Pro

Consider upgrading if:

  • You need to separate work and personal into different workspaces
  • You manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • You have complex workflows needing more columns
  • You have many tasks to track
  • You want room to grow without hitting limits
  • You find value in Kanodo and want to support its development

Try before deciding

Take advantage of the basic version to fully explore Kanodo. Set up a workspace, create a board, use all the features. Only upgrade when you understand the app and know you need more capacity.

Common Questions

We've got you covered. Quick answers to help you get started.

What is Kanodo?

Kanodo is a visual project management tool that uses the kanban methodology to help you organise tasks, track progress and manage projects.

Cards move through columns representing workflow stages, giving you a clear view of where everything stands. It runs natively on your Mac, providing a fast, responsive experience with your data stored locally.

Which devices does Kanodo support?

Kanodo is designed exclusively for macOS. It requires 14.6+ (Sonoma) or later and runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Built as a native Mac app optimized for performance, it launches instantly, uses minimal resources, and integrates seamlessly with native macOS features.

There are currently no iOS, iPadOS or Windows versions available.

Is Kanodo basic free to use?

Kanodo offers a basic version with full access to all features but with generous limits on how many items you can create. This allows you to fully evaluate the app before deciding to upgrade

The Pro version removes all limitations for an affordable one time purchase of £29.99. Yours to keep forever with continual updates and access to all new future features.

What are mini boards?

Mini boards let you create a nested kanban board inside a card. When a task has multiple steps, you can track them as mini cards without cluttering your main board.

Mini cards can have their own content, completion status, checklists and labels. This is perfect for complex tasks that need breaking down.

Can I set due dates on cards?

Cards support three date types: earliest start date, planned start date and due date. Dates appear as badges on cards and can show warning colours when deadlines approach.

You can configure how many days before a due date the warning appears or you can decide to disable dates altogether.

Is my data private?

Your data remains private and never leaves your computer unless you choose to enable iCloud storage for attachments.

The app stores everything locally using Core Data, giving you full control over your information. There are no accounts, no cloud services required and no tracking.

Does Kanodo require an account?

No. Kanodo does not require any account or sign up. Simply download the app from the Mac App Store and start using it immediately.

Your data and file attachments are stored locally on your Mac (unless icloud is enabled). You have complete ownership of everything you create within the Kanodo App.

Can I open multiple cards at once?

Yes. Cards open in their own windows rather than modals. This means you can have multiple card windows open at the same time, even from different boards or workspaces.

Compare tasks side by side, reference one card while working on another, or keep important cards visible while you navigate your boards. Arrange windows however suits your workflow.
