Learn everything you'll ever need to get the most out of Kanodo

Filtering

Filtering allows you to narrow down which cards are visible on a board. When you have many cards across your columns, filters help you focus on specific subsets based on labels, features, or other criteria.

Understanding filtering

Filters temporarily hide cards that do not match your criteria. The hidden cards still exist and retain their positions; they simply are not displayed while the filter is active. When you clear the filter, all cards reappear.

Filtering is useful when you want to:

  • Focus on cards with a specific label (such as all "Urgent" items)
  • Find cards that have attachments
  • See only cards with content or mini-boards
  • Review a specific category of work without distraction

Accessing filters

When viewing a board, look for the filter option in the toolbar. This opens the filter controls where you set your criteria.

Filter types

Kanodo offers several filter types that can be used independently or combined.

Label filters

Filter by one or more labels to show only cards with those labels applied.

How it works

  1. Open the filter controls
  2. Look for the label filter section
  3. Select one or more labels

Multiple label selection: When you select multiple labels, the filter shows cards that have any of the selected labels. For example, selecting "Bug" and "Feature" shows cards labelled "Bug", cards labelled "Feature", and cards labelled with both.

No labels: Cards without any of the selected labels are hidden.

Attachments filter

  • Filter to show only cards that have file attachments.
  • When enabled, only cards with at least one attachment are shown. Cards without attachments are hidden.
  • This is useful when you need to find cards with associated documents or when reviewing work that involves files.

Content filter

  • Filter to show only cards that have content in their description field.
  • When enabled, only cards with non-empty content are shown. Cards with just a title and no additional content are hidden.
  • This helps you find cards that have detailed notes or documentation attached.

Mini-board filter

  • Filter to show only cards that have a mini-board with at least one column.
  • When enabled, only cards with mini-boards are shown. Cards without nested boards are hidden.
  • This is useful when you want to review complex tasks that have been broken down into subtasks.

Combining filters

Multiple filter types can be active simultaneously. When combined, filters use AND logic between different types.

How combination works

If you enable the attachments filter and select a label:

  • Cards must have at least one attachment AND
  • Cards must have the selected label

Only cards meeting both criteria are shown.

Visual feedback

When filters are active, the interface provides visual feedback so you know the view is filtered.

Filter indicator

An indicator in the toolbar shows that filters are active. This reminds you that you are not seeing all cards.

Hidden card awareness

When filters are active, columns may appear to have fewer cards than usual. Remember that hidden cards still exist; they are just not displayed.

Resetting filters

To see all cards again, reset your filters.

Reset all

Click the reset filters button or option to clear all active filters at once. All cards reappear in their normal positions.

Reset individual filters

You can also clear individual filter criteria:

  • Deselect labels to remove label filtering
  • Toggle off property filters to stop filtering by that property

Filters and card operations

While filters are active, you can still:

  • Create new cards (they appear if they match current filters, or when filters are cleared)
  • Move visible cards between columns
  • Edit and manage visible cards

Operations affect the actual cards, not just the filtered view. Moving a card while filtered moves it permanently.

Filters do not persist

Filters are temporary and do not persist when you navigate away. If you:

  • Switch to a different board
  • Navigate to a workspace dashboard
  • Close and reopen the app

The filters reset, and you see all cards when you return to the board.

If you frequently need the same filter, you will need to reapply it each session.

Filtering strategies

Focus sessions

Use filters to focus on one type of work. Select the "Bug" label when fixing issues. Select "Feature" when building new functionality. This reduces visual clutter and helps maintain focus.

Review sessions

Use filters for review activities. Filter by "Ready for Review" label to see what needs your attention. Enable the content filter to find cards with documentation to review.

Finding specific cards

If you remember a card has certain characteristics, use filters to narrow down where it might be. Filter by label, then scan the visible cards. Combine with attachments filter if you remember it had files.

Cleaning up

Use filters to find cards that might need attention. Filter for cards without content (if that is meaningful in your workflow). Check cards without labels to ensure everything is categorised.

Filters and columns

Filters apply across all columns on a board. A column might show no cards if all its cards are filtered out. The column itself remains visible; only its cards are hidden.

This can create an unusual view where some columns appear empty. Remember this is temporary based on your filter settings.

Board search and filters work together. If you have filters active and use board search:

  • Search only looks at visible (non-filtered) cards
  • Hidden cards are not included in search results

To search all cards, clear your filters first.

Common Questions

We've got you covered. Quick answers to help you get started.

What is Kanodo?

Kanodo is a visual project management tool that uses the kanban methodology to help you organise tasks, track progress and manage projects.

Cards move through columns representing workflow stages, giving you a clear view of where everything stands. It runs natively on your Mac, providing a fast, responsive experience with your data stored locally.

Which devices does Kanodo support?

Kanodo is designed exclusively for macOS. It requires 14.6+ (Sonoma) or later and runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Built as a native Mac app optimized for performance, it launches instantly, uses minimal resources, and integrates seamlessly with native macOS features.

There are currently no iOS, iPadOS or Windows versions available.

Is Kanodo basic free to use?

Kanodo offers a basic version with full access to all features but with generous limits on how many items you can create. This allows you to fully evaluate the app before deciding to upgrade

The Pro version removes all limitations for an affordable one time purchase of £29.99. Yours to keep forever with continual updates and access to all new future features.

What are mini boards?

Mini boards let you create a nested kanban board inside a card. When a task has multiple steps, you can track them as mini cards without cluttering your main board.

Mini cards can have their own content, completion status, checklists and labels. This is perfect for complex tasks that need breaking down.

Can I set due dates on cards?

Cards support three date types: earliest start date, planned start date and due date. Dates appear as badges on cards and can show warning colours when deadlines approach.

You can configure how many days before a due date the warning appears or you can decide to disable dates altogether.

Is my data private?

Your data remains private and never leaves your computer unless you choose to enable iCloud storage for attachments.

The app stores everything locally using Core Data, giving you full control over your information. There are no accounts, no cloud services required and no tracking.

Does Kanodo require an account?

No. Kanodo does not require any account or sign up. Simply download the app from the Mac App Store and start using it immediately.

Your data and file attachments are stored locally on your Mac (unless icloud is enabled). You have complete ownership of everything you create within the Kanodo App.

Can I open multiple cards at once?

Yes. Cards open in their own windows rather than modals. This means you can have multiple card windows open at the same time, even from different boards or workspaces.

Compare tasks side by side, reference one card while working on another, or keep important cards visible while you navigate your boards. Arrange windows however suits your workflow.
